At the beginning of March, merger plans are announced between Dresdner Bank and Deutsche Bank, but fail in April. After Bernhard Walter’s resigns, Prof. Bernd Fahrholz becomes Spokesman of the Board of Managing Directors.
Exploratory talks about a possible merger with Commerzbank held in the middle of the year come to nothing.
Takeover of the US investment bank Wasserstein Perella Group Inc., New York, and merger with Dresdner Kleinwort Benson to produce Dresdner Kleinwort Wasserstein.
Acquisition of over 80% of the equity of Lombardkasse AG, Frankfurt am Main.

Takeover of Dresdner Bank by Allianz AG on 23 July 2001.
2002
Merger of Dresdner Bank’s mortgage bank subsidiary (Deutsche Hyp) with Deutsche Bank’s Eurohypo and Commerzbank’s Rheinhyp to form the market leader Eurohypo.
2003
Dr. Herbert Walter becomes Chairman of the Board of Managing Directors.
Opening of “Gallileo”, Dresdner Bank’s new high-rise building in Frankfurt/Main.
Dresdner Bank’s “Custody Solutions” business unit is transferred to Deutsche Bank in the course of 2004.
In November, Dresdner Bank announces a cooperation with Deutsche Wertpapierservice Bank AG (dwpbank). In 2004, dwpbank takes over the settlement, administration and custody of securities for Dresdner Bank.
2004
As of May, Dresdner Bank transfers settlement of payment transactions to Postbank.
2005
In July, Dresdner Bank opens a branch in Budapest, transforming its existing Hungarian subsidiary . The move makes it the first European bank in Hungary to take advantage of the freedom of establishment offered under EU law.
In October, Dresdner Bank opens a branch in Poland’s capital Warsaw, again transforming its existing subsidiary.
Dresdner Bank agrees extensive cooperation in the instalment loans business with the French credit institute Cetelem S. A. The joint venture is renamed Dresdner-Cetelem Kreditbank GmbH, Munich.
2006
As of the middle of the year, the Investment Banking division is renamed Dresdner Kleinwort (previously Dresdner Kleinwort Wasserstein).
Opening of a subsidiary in Monaco: Dresdner Bank Monaco SAM . Dresdner Bank is the only German financial institution with a subsidiary in Monaco.
In November, Dresdner Bank partners with the World Bank to offer the first World Bank bond exclusively for private investors.
At the end of the year, dit (Deutscher Investment Trust) and dbi (dresdnerbank investment management) merge to form Allianz Global Investors Kapitalanlagegesellschaft.
2007
February sees the launch of a new sales concept: the bank agencies.
Dresdner Bank advisors are assigned permanently to Allianz agencies.
